To work for the understanding, respect, support and appropriate education for children with special needs.

Who We Are:

The Westborough Special Education Parent Advisory Council (SEPAC) is a volunteer group of family members of children with disabilities or special learning needs.  We educate, support and exchange ideas and information with each other while collaborating with school professionals and administrators for the best educational experience and outcomes for our children.

SEPAC is created by Massachusetts law and serves as a voice for parents by advising the Westborough school administration and School Committee on special education related matters.

How do I know if SEPAC can help me?

If your child has an Individualized Education Plan (IEP), or a 504 accomodation plan, if your child is struggling with academic, social, behavioral, physical or medical challenges or if you're concerned about your child and don't know where else to turn, SEPAC is for you.

Put simply, SEPAC is here to help you navigate through rough waters.   As a group we represent a reservior of collective knowledge and offer a safe location in which to discuss your concerns, hopes, frustrations and joys of finding your way through the complication journey of raising a child with learning differences.   We encourage parent participation from all interested community members.

What We Do:

• We advocate for quality education for our children and an atmosphere of mutual respect, open communication and understanding among all students, parents, teachers and staff.   
• We advise the Westborough school administration and School Committee on special education issues.
• We assist families to participate effectively in the special education process and improve their quality of life.
• We offer a supportive network of families with whom you can meet regularly.
• We care about you and your family.

How We Do it:

• We host meetings and coffees for families to get support and answers from other families and SEPAC volunteers.
• We provide workshops, presentations and discussions for families and professionals.
• We meet regularly with school administrators.
• We maintain a website and private facebook group and provide information via e-mail about resources, programs and other educational opportunities available within the region and throughout the state.

Basic Rights in Special Education Seminar

In October 2012, Westborough SEPAC and Northboro SEPAC co-sponsored a Basic Rights in Special Education seminar presented by Elaine Rabbitt from the Federation for Children with Special Needs.     This Basic Rights Workshop provided families with an introduction to their rights and responsibilities under:

·         Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA)

·         Massachusetts Special Education Law

·         No Child Left Behind (NCLB)  

The workshop was designed to help parents learn how to be effective partners with their child’s school, to decide the child’s eligibility for special education, and to plan, make decisions and monitor their child’s progress in school.
